View Course Details Babysitting Course – Virtual Classroom – Canada

Intro

The Red Cross Virtual Babysitting course offers basic first aid and caregiving skills for youth 11-15 years old. Participants learn how to provide care to children in a variety of age groups, and how to prevent and respond to emergencies. The course also teaches youth the skills to promote themselves safely as babysitters to prospective families.

Duration

6 hours including breaks

Instructor

Certified Canadian Red Cross Youth Leader

Prerequisite

Minimum 11 years of age (or completion of Grade 5). The recommended age range is 11-15 years.

Supervision

This course is delivered in a virtual classroom (using Zoom). For virtual classes, the following is required:

An adult must be on-site with the learner. They do not need to be present on-screen but must be available in the space to help if needed.

Learners must have their video and audio on for the duration of the session so the instructor can see if they leave the room or are distracted.

Computer Access

Participants will need access to a computer or tablet with reliable internet access, webcam, speakers, and a microphone. We use the Zoom platform for our virtual classes.

We will email you a link to access the class a few days before the start date. You do not need to register for a Zoom account to participate in the class.

Course Content

  • How to be responsible and demonstrate leadership
  • How to make good decisions and manage difficult behaviours
  • Information on children’s developmental stages and specific strategies for each stage
  • How to feed, diaper, dress and play with children and babies
  • How to recognize and prevent unsafe situations, make safe choices and promote safe behaviours
  • First aid skills
  • The business of babysitting

Participant Materials

  • We will mail a copy of the Red Cross Babysitter’s book to participants before the class. Participants can also access the ebook if required.
  • Participants are required to have some household items on hand as props during the virtual class. A list of items and further details will be provided in the confirmation email.
  • Participants will receive a Red Cross Babysitting course completion certificate in the mail soon after the course.
