Emergency Child Care First Aid & CPR B - Summary
Emergency Child Care First Aid & CPR B is a one-day Canadian Red Cross certification course designed for child care workers, Early Childhood Education (ECE) students, parents and guardians. During the eight hours of in-person classroom training, participants learn first-aid skills, injury prevention and safety information. The course includes CPR Level B and AED training and participants learn skills for for babies and children under the age of eight years. Public classes are held at our public course venue, conveniently located near the Coquitlam Centre Mall.
Red Cross Emergency Child Care First Aid & CPR B certification is accepted by BC Child Care Licensing for child care workers who work with children aged 0-8 years only.
Red Cross Standard First Aid & CPR C certification is accepted by BC Child Care Licensing for child care workers who work with babies, young children, older children (8+) and adults.
Child care settings have different requirements depending on the ages of the children. Please ask your employer or potential employer for the exact name of the certification they require for their workplace.

Basic one-day course designed to introduce caregivers to injury prevention skills and knowledge. Course covers lifesaving first aid skills and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR and AED) for children, and babies. Course meets legislation requirements for provincial/territorial early childhood education and day care worker safety requirements*.

Completion
- Attend and participate in 100% of the course
- Successfully demonstrate skills and critical steps
- Minimum 75% mark for written knowledge evaluation
Certification
Within a few days of you successfully completing your training, the Canadian Red Cross will email you an Emergency Child Care First Aid and CPR Level B certification. The certificate is valid for three years from the class date. If you work with school-aged children (over age 8) as well as younger children, you may be required to take Standard First Aid & CPR level C. If unsure, please check with your employer or give us a call.
Recertification
When the Emergency Child Care First Aid & CPR certificate has expired, the full 8 hour course must be repeated. Regarding first aid training for child care workers, the BC Child Care Licensing Regulation states that the first aid certificate "is not renewable unless the holder, before the expiry date, participates in at least 8 hours of further instruction, at least 3.5 hours of which must be delivered in person, followed by an examination that includes demonstration and evaluation of the skills relevant to the matters described in section 2 of this Schedule." (Schedule C of the B.C. Child Care Licensing Regulation)
Child care workers in BC must do eight hours of first aid & CPR training every three years. Shorter recertification courses are not acceptable.
Canadian Red Cross does not yet have a blended class to replace the current Emergency Child Care First Aid & CPR Level B program.

- Pre-reading is not required, however, if English is not your first language, you may like to study the course book before your class. Once you have registered for a class, you can email us to request a copy of the eBook. You can copy and paste the following wording into an email: Hello, my name is......... I registered for Emergency Child Care First Aid on .....(date). Please email a PDF copy of the course book before my class at ......... (email address).
- Printed manuals are available for purchase in class (cash only).
- Emergency Child Care First Aid e-Certificate. The Canadian Red Cross will email a PDF certificate to you upon successful completion of the course.

- CPR Level A includes adult skills only. No child or infant skills.

Red Cross Standard First Aid or Standard First Aid - Blended both meet the current BC Child Care Licensing Regulation requirements as outlined in Schedule C of the document.
If you are unable to find an Emergency Child Care first aid course in your area, or if you work with children over the age of 8 years as well as younger children, we advise you to take Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C instead of Emergency Child Care First Aid & CPR/AED Level B.
Standard First Aid includes CPR/AED Level C - infant, child and adult skills.
Emergency Child Care includes CPR/AED Level B - infant & child skills (up to age 8).

Yes. The Red Cross Wilderness & Remote First Aid (WRFA) program meets the requirements for child care workers in BC as outlined in the Child Care Licensing Regulation, Schedule C, Section 23 (First Aid).
Red Cross WRFA includes all the topics covered by Standard First Aid. Standard First Aid is accepted by Child Care Licensing for child care workers in BC.
BC Child Care Licensing accepts the 8-hour Emergency Child Care First Aid & CPR B course, so there is no need for BC child care workers to take the longer and more expensive 16-hour Standard Child Care First Aid & CPR course.
