Red Cross Babysitting Course - Virtual - Canada
Canadian Red Cross Babysitting training includes basic first aid and caregiving skills for youth 11–15 years old. In this certification course, participants learn how to care for young children and how to prevent and respond to emergencies. They also learn how to promote themselves safely as a babysitter to prospective parents. This virtual training course takes place in an instructor-led Zoom class. If your child is not yet 11 years old, check out our Home Alone Safety for Kids course for children aged 9-12 years.

Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Training
Intro to Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Training
Canadian Red Cross Babysitting training offers basic first aid and caregiving skills for youth 11-15 years old. In this certification course, participants learn how to care for children in a variety of age groups and how to prevent and respond to emergencies. The Canadian Red Cross Babysitting course also teaches youth the skills to promote themselves safely as babysitters to prospective families.
Course fee
$60.00+GST per person. The course fee includes:
- a Red Cross Babysitting course book which will be mailed to the participant's home.
- a Red Cross Babysitting certificate (digital) emailed on class completion.

Course Duration and Timing
The class is 7 hours long including several short breaks. All classes are in Pacific Standard Time (PST) and take place on the days and times noted in the schedule table above.
Attendance
Students must check in to their class on time. Classes will start at the time advertised -(Pacific Standard Time). There will be no make-up sessions for missed classes.

Instructor
To teach a Canadian Red Cross Babysitting class, the instructor must be a certified Canadian Red Cross Youth Leader.
Prerequisite
Participants must be at least 11 years old or have completed Grade 5. The recommended age range for Red Cross Babysitting training is 11-15 years.
Supervision
The Canadian Red Cross Babysitting course is delivered in an instructor-led virtual classroom (using Zoom). For virtual classes, the following is required:
An adult must be on-site with the learner. They do not need to be present on-screen but must be available in the space to help if needed.
Learners must have their video and audio on for the duration of the session so the instructor can see if they leave the room or are distracted.
Computer Access
Participants will need access to a computer or tablet with reliable internet access, webcam, speakers, and a microphone. We use the Zoom platform for our virtual classes.
We will email you a link to access the class a few days before the start date. You do not need to register for a Zoom account to participate in the class.
Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Training - Course Content
- How to be responsible and demonstrate leadership
- How to make good decisions and manage difficult behaviours
- Information on children’s developmental stages and specific strategies for each stage
- How to feed, diaper, dress and play with children and babies
- How to recognize and prevent unsafe situations, make safe choices and promote safe behaviours

Participant Materials
- We will mail a copy of the Red Cross Babysitter’s book to participants upon registration. Participants can also access the ebook if required. This is useful for those who register close to the class date.
- Participants are required to have some household items on hand as props during the virtual class. There's no need to buy anything. We will send a list of items and further details in the confirmation email.
- Participants will receive a Canadian Red Cross Babysitting course completion certificate via email in the week following the class.

Red Cross guidelines require that children are 11 years or older or that they have completed Grade 5. If your child is not yet 11 or has not yet completed Grade 5, please check our course schedule for future course dates. You may also like to consider registering them for our Home Alone Safety for Kids Online course, designed for 9-12 year olds.
- Doll or stuffed animal (to practice baby care - holding, carrying, burping, feeding, comforting etc.
- Diaper or home made improvised diaper (to practice changing a baby's diaper)
- Triangular bandage or clean tea towel (to practice bandaging life-threatening external bleeding.
- Pair of disposable gloves or any gloves available in the home (to practice safe glove removal.
- Thick marker pen or something that looks similar (to practice using an EpiPen)
- Pen and paper for note taking
- Water bottle
- How to look after babies, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children.
- Care for himself/herself and siblings when home alone.
- Create a safe environment, and deal with phone calls and unexpected visitors.
- React confidently in case of an emergency, such as choking, bleeding, poisoning or burns.
- Cope with common problems, such as tantrums and crying.
- Play games and organize activities to keep kids of all ages entertained.
- Manage a babysitting business. This includes creating a resume and a business card and asking the right questions before accepting a babysitting job.

This is a complicated issue, and guidelines vary from province to province. Chronological age is not the only determining factor. Some children can to take care of themselves for short periods at a young age whereas others will never be able to be home alone safely

In British Columbia, there is no legislated minimum age for leaving a child alone for a short period. However, according to a B.C. Supreme Court decision, children under the age of 10 should not be left unsupervised at home.
