Basic First Aid Overview
Basic First Aid (formerly Emergency First Aid) is equivalent to WorkSafeBC Basic First Aid / OFA Level 1 and meets CSA Standard Z1210–17 (Basic).
Basic First Aid teaches lifesaving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills suitable for both work and home settings. The course meets the legislative requirements of provincial and territorial worker safety and insurance boards and includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines.

Fee
Location
Our public classes are held at 1160 Lansdowne Drive, Coquitlam, BC V3B 5V8. We do not have an office at this location.
Parking: A large, free car park is available at the venue.
Areas served: Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore, Belcarra, Vancouver, North Vancouver, New Westminster, Burnaby, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge and Langley.
Basic First Aid Prerequisite
No previous training required.
Minimum recommended age: 12 years old
Participants will need internet access to complete the online theory component.
WorkSafe BC Equivalency
WorkSafe BC accepts Canadian Red Cross Basic First Aid as equivalent to OFA Level 1.
Duration
Total training: 9 hours includes:
Online theory (self-study) - up to 4 hours.
Classroom skills session (in-person) - 6 hours including breaks and test time.
Blended Training
Blended classes include two components:
1. Online theory course.
2. In-person, practical skills class.
You must complete the online self-study training before attending the classroom session.
Within 48 hours of registration, the Canadian Red Cross will email you instructions and a link to your online theory course. Please check your spam/junk folders in your email.
You do not have to complete the online training in one session; you can stop anytime and continue where you left off.
You must complete the skills session within 6 weeks of completing the online portion. If you do not complete the classroom component within 6 weeks of completing the online portion, you will have to re-register and take the course again.
If you are registering more than six weeks before your in-person classroom session, we suggest you begin your online training a couple of weeks before the in-person class so the course material is fresh in your mind.
Participants who have not completed the online course before their scheduled classroom session will not be admitted to the class and will be considered a no-show. No-shows are not eligible for refunds or transfers.
CPR Level
Basic First Aid includes CPR Level C and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training. CPR Level C includes adult, child and infant skills.

Instructor
A certified Canadian Red Cross First Aid Instructor will teach your Basic First Aid course.
Course Completion Requirements

Online Theory: Complete the self-study component prior to your in-person session.

In-Person Session: Attend 100% of the class within 6 weeks of completing online training.

Skills Assessment: Successfully demonstrate all practical skills and critical steps.

Knowledge Exam: Achieve at least 75% on the multiple-choice evaluation.
Certification Details

Validity: Valid for 3 years.

Delivery: The Canadian Red Cross will email your PDF certificate within 2–3 business days of completing the classroom skills session.
Basic First Aid Recertification
We offer the full Basic First Aid course at a discounted renewal price for participants holding a current, unexpired Canadian Red Cross or St. John Ambulance Basic/Emergency First Aid certificate.
First-time participants or those with expired certificates must register for the full course. WorkSafeBC recognizes this recertification as equivalent to Basic First Aid. View Course Schedule

Private Group Training Overview

Course Duration: 8 hours total (up to 4 hours online theory + 5 hours in-person skills training, including breaks and testing).

Online Theory: Once booked, participants receive a Red Cross online access link. Self-paced study (approx. 2–4 hours) must be completed before the in-person class.

In-Person Session: Includes hands-on practical skills, CPR training, a mid-session break, and a multiple-choice exam.

Certification: Requires 100% attendance and a minimum score of 75% on the test.

Location: We can host at our Coquitlam classroom or at your venue.

Space Setup: Your location must have enough room for physical distancing (approx. 2 meters per participant). If your space is small, narrow, or noisy, we recommend using our Coquitlam facility.

Yes. Canadian Red Cross Basic First Aid meets the CSA Standard Z1210-17 (Basic) and is accepted by provincial authorities (such as WorkSafeBC as equivalent to OFA Level 1).
No. Red Cross Basic First Aid does NOT meet the requirements of the BC Child Care Licensing Regulations (Schedule C)(opens in new tab). Instead, please consider taking our Red Cross Emergency Child Care & CPR/AED Level B or Intermediate First Aid & CPR/AED Level C courses.
CPR Level A covers adult CPR/AED skills only, whereas CPR Level C covers adult, child, and infant resuscitation.
Canadian Red Cross Basic First Aid certification is valid for three years.
