Basic/Emergency First Aid - Summary

June 2026 Update

To align with required CSA naming conventions, Canadian Red Cross will be transitioning their First Aid program names. This change will be implemented in phases as updates are made across materials and systems.  There are no changes to course content. The revisions introduced in Fall 2025 remain compliant with all current legislative requirements, including all provincial and territorial occupational health and safety standards.

The updated program and certification names are as follows:

Basic/Emergency First Aid (replacing Emergency First Aid). Resulting in a Basic First Aid Certification.
Intermediate/Standard First Aid (replacing Standard First Aid). Resulting in an Intermediate First Aid Certification.

Basic/Emergency First Aid teaches lifesaving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills suitable for both work and home settings. The course meets the legislation requirements of provincial and territorial worker safety and insurance boards and includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines.

WorkSafeBC recognizes Canadian Red Cross Basic/Emergency First Aid as equivalent to Basic First Aid, formerly known as Occupational First Aid Level 1 (OFA Level 1).

Canadian Red Cross Basic/Emergency First Aid meets CSA Standard Z1210–17 – Basic.

Total training: 9 hours includes:

Online theory (self-study) - up to 4 hours.

Classroom skills session (in-person) - 6 hours including breaks and test time.

Blended Training

How blended classes work

Blended classes include two components:
1. Online theory course.
2. In-person, practical skills class.
You must complete the online self-study training before attending the classroom session.

Within 48 hours of registration, the Canadian Red Cross will email you instructions and a link to your online theory course. Please check your spam/junk folders in your email.

You do not have to complete the online training in one session; you can stop anytime and continue where you left off.

You must complete the skills session within 6 weeks of completing the online portion. If you do not complete the classroom component within 6 weeks of completing the online portion, you will have to re-register and take the course again.

If you are registering more than six weeks before your in-person classroom session, we suggest you begin your online training a couple of weeks before the in-person class so the course material is fresh in your mind.

Participants who have not completed the online course before their scheduled classroom session will not be admitted to the class and will be considered a no-show. No-shows are not eligible for refunds or transfers.

CPR Level

Basic/Emergency First Aid includes CPR Level C and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training.
