Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Training

Intro to Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Training

Canadian Red Cross Babysitting training offers basic first aid and caregiving skills for youth 11-15 years old. In this certification course, participants learn how to care for children in a variety of age groups and how to prevent and respond to emergencies. The Canadian Red Cross Babysitting course also teaches youth the skills to promote themselves safely as babysitters to prospective families.

Course fee

$70.00+GST per person. The course fee includes:

- Red Cross Babysitting course book. This is mailed to the participant's home soon after registration.
- Red Cross Babysitting certificate (digital). The Canadian Red Cross emails this on class completion.

Course Duration and Timing

The Red Cross virtual Babysitting class is 7 hours long, including several short breaks. All classes are in Pacific Standard Time (PST) and take place on the days and times noted in the schedule table above.

Attendance

Students must check in to their class on time. Classes will start at the time advertised (Pacific Standard Time). There will be no make-up sessions for missed classes.

Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Training for Private Groups

Instructor

To teach a Canadian Red Cross Babysitting class, the instructor must be a certified Canadian Red Cross Youth Leader. At Safe + Sound, all of our Babysitting course instructors are fully certified and experienced in teaching this class.

Prerequisite

Participants must be at least 11 years old or have completed Grade 5. The recommended age range for Red Cross Babysitting training is 11-15 years.

Supervision

The Canadian Red Cross Babysitting course is delivered in an instructor-led virtual classroom (using Zoom). For virtual classes, the following is required:

  • An adult must be on-site with the learner. They do not need to be present on-screen but must be available in the space to help if needed.
  • Learners must have their video and audio on for the duration of the session so the instructor can see if they leave the room or are distracted.

Computer Access

Participants will need access to a computer or tablet with reliable internet access, webcam, speakers, and a microphone. We use the Zoom platform for our virtual classes.

We will email you a link to access the class a few days before the start date. You do not need to register for a Zoom account to participate in the class.

Canadian Red Cross Babysitting Training - Course Content

  • Being responsible and demonstrating leadership.
  • Making good decisions and managing difficult behaviours.
  • Child developmental stages and specific strategies for each stage.
  • Feeding, diapering, dressing and playing with children and babies.
  • Recognizing and preventing unsafe situations.
  • Making safe choices and promoting safe behaviours
  • First aid skills and coping with emergencies.
  • The business of babysitting. How to get babysitting work safely.

Participant Materials

  • We will mail a copy of the Red Cross Babysitter’s book to participants upon registration. Participants can also access the ebook if required. This is useful for those who register close to the class date.
  • Participants need to have some household items on hand as props during the virtual class. There's no need to buy anything. We will send a list of items and further details in the confirmation email.
  • The Canadian Red Cross emails a Babysitting course completion certificate in the week following the class.
