Basic First Aid
WorkSafeBC recognizes the Canadian Red Cross Emergency First Aid & CPR C as equivalent to Basic First Aid, formerly known as Occupational First Aid Level 1 (OFA Level 1). Students learn lifesaving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills suitable for both work and home settings. The course meets the legislation requirements of provincial and territorial worker safety and insurance boards and includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines.
Basic First Aid meets CSA Standard Z1210–17 – Basic. Although the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) uses the term Basic to describe Emergency First Aid training, the Canadian Red Cross will continue to use Emergency First Aid. The course is fully aligned with CSA standards despite the difference in naming conventions.
Course Duration and Pricing
Duration: Basic First Aid blended includes 8 hours of training. Students complete an online theory component, which can take up to 4 hours. This is followed by 4-5 hours of in-person, classroom-based skills training.
Pricing: $ 120.00 + GST for full course. $90.00+GST for recertification.

Basic First Aid Course Details

Basic First Aid (Emergency First Aid & CPR/AED Level C) teaches participants lifesaving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for the workplace or home.
The course meets WorkSafe BC requirements and is accepted in B.C. workplaces. It includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines.
Duration
8 hours of training includes:
Online theory (self-study) - 4 hours. You'll receive a link to your online training via email within 48 hours of registration.
Classroom skills session (in-person) - 4 hours plus breaks.
Participants must complete the online course before attending their in-person session. Participants who have not completed the online class before their scheduled classroom session will not be admitted to the class and will be considered a 'no-show. ' No-shows are not eligible for refunds or transfers.
Fee
Basic First Aid - Full Course
$120.00+GST per person. Includes CPR pocket mask and Red Cross First Aid eBook (download). This is for people who don't have current/valid first aid certificate.
Basic First Aid - Renewal
$90.00+GST per person. Includes CPR pocket mask and Red Cross First Aid eBook (download). This is for people who need to renew their current (unexpired) certificate - see below.
How to renew your certification
To renew your certification, WorkSafeBC requires you retake the full training, as no shorter refresher course is available.
If you have previously taken Basic First Aid (Emergency First Aid & CPR/AED Level C) and have a current, unexpired certificate, you may be eligible for our discounted price of $90.00. To take advantage of the lower fee, please email your current certificate to us and let us know which date you'd like to register for. We will email you the course details and an invoice, which you can pay online.
Location
Our public classes are held at 1160 Lansdowne Drive, Coquitlam, BC V3B 5V8. We do not have an office at this location.
Parking: A large, free car park is available at the venue.
Areas served include the Tri-Cities and Metro Vancouver, comprising Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Anmore, Belcarra, Vancouver, North Vancouver, New Westminster, Burnaby, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Richmond and Langley.
Prerequisite
No previous training required.
Minimum recommended age: 12 years old
Participants will need internet access to complete the online theory component.
WorkSafe BC Equivalency
WorkSafe BC accepts Canadian Red Cross Emergency First Aid as equivalent to Basic First Aid.
Blended Training
How blended classes work
Blended classes include two components:
1. Online theory course.
2. In-person, practical skills class.
You must complete the online self-study training before attending the classroom session.
Within 48 hours of registration, the Canadian Red Cross will email you instructions and a link to your online theory course. Please check your spam/junk folders in your email.
You do not have to complete the online training in one session; you can stop anytime and continue where you left off.
You must complete the skills session within 6 weeks of completing the online portion. If you do not complete the classroom component within 6 weeks of completing the online portion, you will have to re-register and take the course again.
If you are registering more than six weeks before your in-person classroom session, we suggest you begin your online training a couple of weeks before the in-person class so the course material is fresh in your mind.
Participants who have not completed the online course before their scheduled classroom session will not be admitted to the class and will be considered a no-show. No-shows are not eligible for refunds or transfers.
CPR Level
Basic First Aid (Emergency First Aid & CPR/AED) includes CPR Level C and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training.
CPR Level C includes adult, child and infant skills.

Completion
- Complete the online self-study theory component before the in-person session.
- Attend and participate in 100% of the in-person classroom course within six weeks of completing the online component.
- Demonstrate all practical skills and critical steps to the required level.
- Achieve a minimum mark of 75% on the multiple-choice knowledge evaluation.
Certification
Emergency First Aid & CPR/AED Level C Blended certification is valid for three years. The Canadian Red Cross will email you a PDF certificate within two to three business days of successfully completing the classroom skills session. The Canadian Red Cross is a trusted training partner of WorkSafeBC and Red Cross certification is recognized in BC workplaces and across Canada.
Basic First Aid Recertification
We offer the full Basic First Aid course at a lower recertification rate for those with current, unexpired Basic or Emergency First Aid certificates from the Canadian Red Cross or St. John Ambulance. Please call 604-945-7277 for current pricing. The special recertification rate is not available via our website. Before calling to register, please email a copy of your Basic/Emergency First Aid certificate to info@learnfirstaid.ca and let us know which course date you would like to register for. People with expired Emergency First Aid certificates and those who have never taken the training must register for the Basic or Emergency First Aid full course.

- You are not required to do any pre-reading. However, if English is not your first language, you may like to study the course book before your class. Once you have registered for a class, you can email us to request a copy of the eBook.
- Upon successful completion of the course, the Canadian Red Cross will email you your Basic/Emergency First Aid certificate.

Yes. Red Cross Emergency First Aid & CPR/AED C the same as Basic First Aid?
Emergency First Aid is an 8-hour course. Register for the Canadian Red Cross Emergency First Aid & CPR Level C course if you need a Basic First Aid certificate. The course includes 4 hours of online theory training followed by 4.5 hours of in-person classroom skills training.
Emergency First Aid – Meets CSA Standard Z1210–17 – Basic
Basic First Aid includes 8 hours of training, during which participants will learn first aid for life-threatening injuries and conditions.
Intermdiate First Aid, also known as Standard First Aid, includes 16 hours of training that includes all topics in Emergency First Aid and additionally:
- Head, neck and spinal injuries
- Bone, muscle and joint injuries
- Sudden medical injuries
- Environmental illness
- Poisons
Yes. Red Cross Emergency First Aid and Standard First Aid certifications are recognized by WorkSafeBC as equivalent to the Occupational First Aid (OFA) Level 1 program. You can find a list of OFA Level 1 equivalencies here.
No. Red Cross Emergency First / Basic First Aid Aid does NOT meet the requirements of the BC Child Care Licensing Regulations (Schedule C). Instead, please consider taking our Red Cross Emergency Child Care & CPR/AED Level B or Standard First Aid & CPR/AED Level C courses.
